Dentists and Dental Assistants: Proficiency in Sedation

Dentistry is a competitive healthcare field. That’s why dentists and dental assistants are expected to possess a certain scope of skills to be able to stay ahead of the competition and provide the highest level of patient care. A lot of such skills have to do with sedation, as it can accompany dental procedures for adults.

An expert dentist specialist should be proficient in medical technology, know all the ins and outs of medication and sedation administration, be able to educate their patients, and conduct patient care including wound treatment, emergency management, and follow-up care.

Education and Licensing

Education and licensing requirements for dental specialists can vary depending on the dental position and state of practice. For example, in some states, dental assistants can work in the field after receiving a high school diploma and completing a dental assistant training program. Their certification is optional, but after passing the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB), they can become Certified Dental Assistants (CDA) and enhance their career opportunities.

As for dentists, the requirements are much more strict and complex.

They need to:

Have a Bachelor’s degree in a science-related field

Pass the Dental Admission Test (DAT)

Complete four years of dental school

Receive clinical experience

Pass the national and statelicensing exams

Complete four years of dental school

Other requirements for both dentists and dental specialists can include continuing education and some specialty training related to their field of operation.
